Our Black Forest

Well, first things first, Colby refused to wear his pull ups on Wednesday and has used the potty ever since with no accidents. When I got home from work he said, "Mommy, me no need no diapee." And that was it! We are thrilled, if you have been around us lately, you know that potty training is just something we have not put much effort in to. Fighting the potty training battle has not been on my list of things I want to do, so this has been an awesome surprise.
On Thursday Matt was surfing the web and found a nice B&B in the Black Forest so we made reservations and headed down with the Hall's for a great weekend. The best trips, to me, are those that are an unexpected delight. We did not know much about the area or what there was to do there but we found our schedule booked up after talking with the British B&B owner. We loved the little village that we stayed in, there were hundreds of twists and turns up many mountains but it has to be one of the prettiest places that we have visited. We had a blast! Here is George and Colby enjoying the waterfalls that were about a mile down the road from our B&B. The weather was amazing. Beautiful flowers were plentiful at all the houses.
Coming down the trail with George close behind.

These two daredevils climbed everywhere.
About a ten minute walk from our B&B was a deer sanctuary where we were able to feed many deer. I had to include these three shots of Colby because he was so tickled by the deer that it totally cracked me up.

Colby liked to copy people these days, here his is mimicking Justin one night at the B&B.
So, Colby is a hoot these days. We were walking to the restaurant where we ate dinner and Colby sat down at this bus stop announcing that he needed to take a break. He put his hands on his knees and was breathing hard. Mind you, the restaurant was less than a five minute walk from the B&B. Here is Justin, Tiff and George recreating "Colby's break" after dinner.
We had Black Forest Ham for Breakfast so Jill insisted George order Black Forest cake after dinner....She was actually calling every thing Black Forest ---, like Black Forest grass, Black Forest bread, you name it!

Laney, trying to steal a sip of George's Black Forest Pils. ha ha.
This is the third biggest cathedral in Europe, in St. Blasien, we were pretty impressed by that title. Colby is being persnickety and refusing to stand with the group.
There was a woodcarving competition going on as well as a flea market that we stumbled upon. This was my favorite carving. Jill said it was modeled after her...The beginning of the market. I found Laney some hand knitted booties and a hat.

We found this great play park with rides and animals, etc. Colby enjoyed the animals and the playgrounds while Tiff and Justin rode every ride at the park.
A tree house at the park.

We came to this glass factory just in the nick of time to watch a glass blowing show.

Tiff and Jill coming to the end of their ride down the mountain. This is the longest run I have ever seen. I could hear Jill yelling all the way down.
Waiting for their ride down the mountain (Colby and I were on the lift when I took this.)
Hamming it up on the top of the mountain.

George and Justin were on the lift behind us.
The track, it was very long and steep! Our big boy, so proud he got to ride up and down the lift with Mama. It took about 15 minutes each way.Jill and George celebrated their 2nd anniversary this weekend.

Our Bed and Breakfast, the Grunenburg, was
built in the 1800s and was home the local mayor. It is located at the centre of the beautiful spa mountain town of Menzenschwand, near St Blasien and Feldberg in the Southern Black Forest area of Germany. A stones throw from the Swiss and French borders. http://www.thegrunenberg.com/Whole%20page.htm. Back side of our B&B,
Sweet boys, Justin is George's son from his first marriage. He is half German and attends German schools. He is fluent in both languages and I remember him holding Colby in the hospital when he was born.
Breakfast nook, notice Colby's spot of food on his shirt first thing in the morning!
Big kids table.
The food was yummy, fresh butter, milk and juice along with warm bread and other goodies.
