Berlin for Valentine's Day Weekend

As you may know, Matt planned a surprise Valentine's trip for me. I knew we were going somewhere without Colby (who stayed with the nanny) but I did not know where until we got to the airport. We went to Berlin and had a great time. It reminded us of being in Pusan, such a large city with 3+ million (though Pusan had more!) It was fun to be able to take the subway, the bus or a taxi around to run around the city. Here is the view from our hotel balcony. We stayed at the Radisson Berlin. We saw so many great things that we have decided to take turns planning a surprise trip every Valentine's day from here on out! Outside of our balcony was the Berliner Dom, a Protestant church.
Checkpoint Charlie. Those are not real sandbags, they have had to replace them with cement ones because people kept stealing them! The first day we took the red double decker bus you see on the left around the city, there was a live tour guide on it and you can get off and on the bus at various stops throughout the city, as it came every 30 minutes. We got off here and got left because Matt was getting a coffee and so I had to get an ice cream!

Ruins that are in the main luxury shopping area of the city, they leave it in ruins to remind everyone of the war.
We had lunch at theHard Rock Cafe.
On the bus touring the city.
These bricks in the road show where the Wall used to be.

Where the German parliament assembles to hold meetings.
Matt wanted to take this to lunch but I voted "no."
Holocaust Memorial, built in honor of the millions of Jews that were killed by the Nazi soldiers. It is right across the street from the American Embassy. It was built on the place where Hitler's bunker was and where he killed himself. It resembles a Jewish cemetary, you can't tell by our pictures but the ground is rolling in between the pillars.

Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of German reunification. Built 1791. The guy in the middle is real, guy on the right is a statue.
Front of the church by our hotel, TV tower in the back.
Aquarium in our hotel lobby, so cool! You could take an elevator up inside of it.
They had glass elevators so you could see all the fish.

On Valentine's night we went to see the Blue Man Group show. This is what happens when you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a picture of your husband with a BLUE MAN and you don't turn on the flash......
Self portrait before the show.

They were having something like the German Academy Awards and there was a red carpet, many stars, fancy cars, etc. The show was going on inside and shown on the big screen outside.

Waiting for the city bus....brrrr!
Sunset from our room.
I don't want this job, but the get-up was pretty clever, selling brauts on a grill that this guy carried around.
This was a display at the former SS and Gestapo headquarters of woman who befriended a Polish man, had her head shaved in a public forum and was sent to a concentration camp for her "crime."

At the former SS headquarters, Berlin Wall behind.
On Saturday we got a ticket that covered all public transportation for the day for only 6,00 Euro, which we thought was a steal. Here is Matt on the S-Bahn.
The Berlin Wall, the longest remaining portion is about 1km long.
